Looking rad in red

Image
Dear Diary, J esse :  It was about time that I knitted something for Adam.  I bought a pattern on Etsy for this reversible cardigan.  Interestingly, I had knitted this pattern in a size for babies as well as for the 8" Hitty doll.  I am well acquainted with it. "I think red suits me!" For you knitters, I'll give the run-down details.  This was knitted with a 5-ply knitting wool.  Ordinarily, that size wouldn't be my choice because 5-ply is slow to knit with; extreme care and attention must be paid to avoid splitting the strands. I had a skein of this wool and I didn't want to waste it.  I have several more skeins in different colours so there's more to come. He's very handsome in these clothes. I used 2.75 mm needles for the ribbing and 3.50 mm needles for the body.  These needles gave me the exact gauge (28 stitches/10 cm) in the final blocked garment.  I did learn that I need new eye glasses, however! Back to front ...

True colors are beautiful

Image
Dear Diary, J esse : We are in pain at the suffering inflicted on the people at the Pulse in Orlando.  The majority of those who were shot were LGBT - members of my own tribe.  Let there be no mistake: this was a hate crime against gay people . I can't stop the song True Colors, sung by Cyndi Lauper, which keeps running through my head.  I want to share the lyrics here. You with the sad eyes Don't be discouraged Oh I realize Its hard to take courage In a world full of people You can lose sight of it all And the darkness inside you Can make you feel so small But I see your true colors Shining through I see your true colors And that's why I love you So don't be afraid to let them show Your true colors True colors are beautiful, Like a rainbow True colours, like a rainbow Show me a smile then, Don't be unhappy, can't remember When I last saw you laughing If this world makes you crazy And you've ta...

New letter - minneapolis mail call

Image
Dear Diary, A dam: Yeah!  Another letter from the USA!  We enjoy hearing from our friends. Dear Angelo & Adam – When we read your blog, one of the things we notice is how helpful you guys are to your papa.  You are such thoughtful boys!  You’re always busy collecting eggs, picking vegetables and berries, and tending the goats.  Being urban dolls, many of these chores are unfamiliar to us.  However we do try to help Steve around the house whenever we can.  We pick up our clothes and books and generally tidy up.   One of our favorite jobs is getting the daily mail.  Every afternoon when we hear the clank of the mail slot, we know it's time to go collect all of the fun and exciting things that we have received. Of course some things are more interesting than others. We get a fair number of bills.  We save these for Steve and he does something with them – we’re not exactly sure what. ...

Mushrooms or martians?

Image
Dear Diary, A ngelo :  This morning I got up early to get a head start on the day.  When I looked outside, I couldn't believe my eyes!  There, in the middle of the yard was something which hadn't been there before (or at least I don't think it was).  I was scared to go outside to look by myself, so I work up Adam to come and see for himself.  Cautiously, we went outside. "Adam, I think this is an extraterrestrial!" Needless to say, I was very reluctant to go too close.   A dam : I went outside to see this thing growing in our yard.  I decided I'd better look around for others.  I went into the secret garden and about died of fright! "Angelo, there are more over here.  I think they're babies." A ngelo :  Both Adam and I ran to the house to get papa.  We made him get out of bed and come outside to see that overnight we'd been invaded by Martians.  It turns out we were kind of wrong. A dam : They ...

A letter about winter reading

Image
Dear Diary, A dam :  As spring advances in the northern hemisphere, here, in the southern hemisphere autumn is gradually turning to winter.   There are lots of chores to do before the frosts set in and the days are long, dark and cold.  It's good to take some time to plan how we'll spend our winter.  It was fun to get this letter from our friends up north, to learn how they passed the cold months.  Dear Angelo & Adam, Winters in our part of the world can be long, cold and dark.  However, they do provide a great opportunity for us to catch up on our reading.  We want to share with you some of the things we have enjoyed reading over the winter. For some unknown reason we have a few books in Italian in the house.  Giancarlo is very fond of these.  He loves to read stories in his native tongue, because he says the Italian language is “molto bella”. Corduroy is Sasha’s favo...

A year of happiness

Image
Dear Diary, A dam : Somehow, it doesn't seem possible that I've been here for an entire year!  I was asked if this is my birthday, but I don't really know when that might be.  It's not really an anniversary, either.  It just marks the special date when I came to my new home to start a real life. I remember the long, long trip to New Zealand.  I landed at Auckland and then had an 8 day delay because it was the long Easter holidays. "This is me, arriving at my new home a year ago." "Here I am today, waiting to surprise our postie!" A ngelo :  I can remember waiting for Adam to arrive.  I was so excited; I couldn't stand it!  Papa promised us a new family member.  I liked this idea because I wanted another doll to be friends with. "Here I am, waving to the postie in case Adam was in the delivery truck." I wanted to give something special to Adam on his special day but i just didn't know what to giv...

A letter from the united states

Image
Dear Diary, A ngelo :  Today, we received a letter with photos from our newest friends in the United States.  This is what they wrote to us. Dear Angelo & Adam.       We know that naturally you are curious about your new friends in the U.S., so we have sent some pictures of me, Giancarlo and Tony.  In these photos we have just come inside from a walk and some fresh air.  Even though spring is just around the corner, it's still a bit chilly.  In fact, we had a dusting of snow last night.  I'm the one with the blond hair and striped sweater.  Giancarlo has dark hair and is wearing a plaid jacket and green shirt and Tony is the tall one.  He's wearing his new Kidz and Cats shirt and jacket.  Giancarlo is quite charming and outgoing, as you will find out.  He and I really like Tony.  He's a great guy and a lot of fun, even though he can be a bit of a worrier.  He always cautioning us not to play on th...
